BackcountryStore.com Launches New Site Design

Site to feature open access to pure information

by Base Camp Communications

HEBER, Utah --BackcountryStore.com – the fastest-growing pure-play e-commerce site for high-end, specialty outdoor gear – today unveiled a newly redesigned site that drops the ropes and opens the gates for easy access to many sources of objective, unfiltered information on the best gear for skiing, snowboarding, climbing, camping and other outdoor adventures.

“The only thing we are pushing is knowledge,” said Jim Holland, BackcountryStore.com’s chief executive officer. “We know that outdoor gear hounds aren’t impulse buyers. They research many different sources before they make a buying decision. On our new site, we give our customers all of the info they need from all the sources they respect and then we let them decide which gear is best and which is best for them.”

BackcountryStore.com now has more gear knowledge and objective information incorporated into the site than any other outdoor e-commerce site to help customers make the most educated buying decision possible, including:

  • Blunt, peer product reviews under each product so skeptical customers can get authentic verdicts on gear, and real experts can share their experiences and tips.
  • A product comparison feature that allows customers to compare and contrast product features for up to four pieces of gear in a category.
  • A dynamic list of overall and category-specific best sellers, so customers can see what’s hot and what’s not.
  • Concise, expert product descriptions written by BackcountryStore.com’s small collection of highly-trained outdoor experts.
  • Real-time inventory of products so customers can see availability while they shop. No disappointing surprises at checkout.
  • Big, big pictures of the gear so you can see the most minute details
  • Search and Live Help features on every single page…because it is crucial that the customer find what they need as soon as possible.

“With the amount of information readily available, we are better-equipped to help our customers make an educated decision than any outdoor store, on-line or even in-store,” said Holland.

The new open access philosophy is also incorporated into other aspects of the site as well including check-out. “Unlike most web sites, we have many different in which we encourage the customer to communicate directly with us,” said Holland.

  • A “What’s wrong with this page?” link so customers can immediately report any problems on the site.
  • An “Ask a Question” link for customers who need a little guidance.
  • A “Where’s my Stuff?” feature to immediately track your package.
  • Live Help and 1-800 number are prominently displayed on every page to provide instant access to BackcountryStore.com’s veteran outdoor customer service crew
  • Shipping is calculated before you checkout, and often is posted as a big fat $ZERO, because all orders over $50 are shipped for free within the contiguous United States.

“We’ve been in e-commerce for a long time and this is the first time we had a chance to stop and say, ‘What have we learned? What is most important to our customers?’, and been able to apply to this knowledge to a new platform. With a lot of help from our customers, we have learning incorporated into our site that nobody else has,” said John Bresee, BackcountryStore.com’s vice-president of business development.

“The nice part about being a relatively small, web-only company is that we can design a new feature in response to what our customers are telling us and bust it out in a couple of days, like the real-time inventory feature we added,” said Bresee. “We’re just beginning. This new platform gives us a solid foundation from which to improve our site every day for the next 10 years.”
