Backcountry.com Expands for Third Time in Three Years

New Warehouse Quadruples Facility Size and Capabilities

by Base Camp Communications

Park City, UT (May 9, 2005) – Backcountry.com, the Internet’s fasting growing retailer of specialty outdoor gear, is increasing the size of its warehouse and distribution center for the third time in as many years. The company, which was ranked number 93 on the Inc. 500 list of fastest growing U.S. companies last year, is moving from a 47,000 square foot building to a new 207,000 square foot warehouse and distribution center, effectively quadrupling the size of its facility.

Backcountry.com’s rapid growth, from a 5,000 square foot office and warehouse combination space in 2002 to their new 207,000 square foot warehouse in West Valley, UT, and 6,500 square feet of office space at their corporate headquarters in Park City, has astonished even owner and founder Jim Holland.

“If you had asked us three years ago if we would need this much space, we would never have thought it was possible,” said Holland. “As we look to strategic acquisitions, we’re now seriously considering investing in local moving companies”.

Stocking and selling nearly 250 different brands and over 25,000 products, Backcountry.com needed the new facility to keep up with the ever increasing demand for the array of backcountry and outdoor gear that they sell.

“Our underlying goal is to get the gear into the hands of our customers as fast as humanly possible,” said Backcountry.com Director of Operations Jeff Carter. “Our new Salt Lake distribution facility will enable us to move the gear faster and with greater efficiency, even as our client base grows exponentially in size.”

Kneel Robinson, who has been Backcountry.com’s real estate agent since they moved from their 5,000 square foot office/warehouse workspace in 2002, also expressed amazement at the company’s speedy growth.

“This is the kind of client real estate agents dream about,” he said.

Robinson noted Backcountry.com’s remarkable growth coincided with a general market slowdown in the Salt Lake area, a factor that may have allowed the company real estate options that they otherwise may have not had access to. But as Backcountry.com has grown, their workspace options have become fewer and fewer.

Noted Kneel, “Last time we looked for space, we had dozens of options to choose from. This time, we only had three.”
